AI Consulting / Project-Based Engagements

An AI Expert on Your Team. For Exactly as Long as You Need One.

You don't need a long-term retainer or a full-time hire. You need someone who's done this before to tell you what's worth doing, or to build it with you. Hire us by the project. Leave with results, not a dependency.

The Situation

You're past "should we use AI?" You're stuck on "now what?"

Somewhere between ignoring AI entirely and signing a six-month transformation engagement, there's where most businesses actually live: you've seen what's possible. Maybe you've experimented with AI in a ChatGPT subscription here, a tool trial there. But experiments aren't a strategy, and you have a real business to run. The questions piling up are practical ones:

  • Which of the fifty things AI "could" do for us is actually worth the money?
  • The tools we've tried didn't stick. Why?
  • We know what we want to automate. Who actually builds it?
  • Is our data / our team / our tech stack even ready for this?
  • How do we do this without creating a security or compliance mess?

You don't need a subscription to answers. You need the answers. That's a project, not a marriage.

How to Engage

Two ways to use us. Pick one, or start with the first.

Track A — Advisory

You bring the decisions. We bring the judgment.

Strategy, evaluation, and straight answers, from someone not trying to sell you a new subscription. Advisory projects are short, sharp, and end with you knowing exactly what to do (and what to skip).

  • AI Opportunity Assessment: We map your operations, identify where AI genuinely pays, and hand you a prioritized roadmap with ROI estimates for each opportunity. Usually the right first project.
  • Vendor & Tool Evaluation: You're comparing platforms or drowning in demos. We cut through the marketing and tell you what fits your stack, your team, and your budget.
  • Build vs. Buy Decisions: Should you subscribe, customize, or have something built? We run the real math, including the costs vendors don't mention.
  • AI Readiness & Risk Review: Data, security, workflow, and team readiness; plus the governance guardrails to adopt AI without creating a liability. So your first project doesn't stall in month one or bite you in month six.

What you walk away with: written recommendations, real numbers, and a plan your team can execute (with us or without us).

Track B — Implementation

You know what you need. We make it real.

AI agents and automated workflows, designed, built, integrated, and handed over working. Not a proof-of-concept that dies in a demo — production systems your team actually uses.

  • AI Agents: Voice agents that answer and qualify calls, chat agents that handle customer questions, agents that follow up with every lead until they answer. Built for your business, connected to your systems.
  • Workflow Automation: The invoice chasing, data re-entry, scheduling, onboarding, and reporting that eat your payroll.
  • System Integration: Making your CRM, phones, calendar, and back office talk to each other so information moves without a human copy-pasting it.
  • Rescue Projects: You bought something that was supposed to do this, and it doesn't. We figure out whether to fix it or replace it, then do that.

What you walk away with: a working system, documentation, and a team trained to run it. We build for handover, not lock-in.

Most clients start with a short advisory project and graduate to implementation once the highest-ROI target is obvious. But if you already know what you need built, skip straight to Track B — we won't make you buy a strategy you already have.

How Engagements Work

Scoped like projects, because they are projects.

Scoping call (free)

Thirty minutes. You describe the problem; we tell you honestly whether it's an advisory question, a build, or not worth doing at all. Yes, "don't do this" is an answer we give.

Fixed scope, fixed deliverables

Every engagement has a written scope: what we're delivering, what it costs, and when it's done. No open-ended hourly meters, no scope that mysteriously grows.

Do the work

Advisory projects typically run days to a few weeks. Implementations run weeks, not quarters. We build in increments you can see working.

Handover, not hostage-taking

You get documentation, training, and systems you own. If you want ongoing support afterward, we offer it, but the project is designed so you don't need us later.

Why Us

The judgment comes from experience, not a certificate in prompting.

AI consulting has a credibility problem: a lot of it is sold by people who discovered AI eighteen months before you did. Consort Labs is different in two ways.

We've run operations, not just talked about them. Behind this practice is 20+ years of executive operating experience running programs, IT services, and teams at the VP/GM level, with the PMP and ITIL discipline to prove it. We know what it takes for a change to survive contact with a real business, real staff, and a real budget. That's why our recommendations account for the humans and processes around the technology, not just the technology.

We build what we recommend. Our advice is grounded in shipping production AI agents and automations — voice, chat, SMS, and the workflow plumbing behind them. When we say something is feasible, it's because we've built it, not read about it.

Fit Check

We'd rather tell you now than six weeks in.

A good fit if…

  • You want expert help for a defined problem or project, not a permanent engagement
  • You'd rather pay for outcomes than for hours of meetings
  • You want advice from someone who can also build, and builds from someone who can also advise
  • You're a small or mid-sized business where the ROI has to be real, because it's your money

Probably not a fit if…

  • You want a body-shop of developers on indefinite hire
  • You're looking for someone to validate a decision that's already been made
  • You need enterprise procurement theater. We're built for owners who can say yes
Questions

Straight answers

How much does an engagement cost?
It depends entirely on scope, which is why the scoping call is free. Advisory projects are typically a fraction of implementation projects; every quote is fixed before work begins.
How is this different from your other services?
This is for distinct, defined projects with a start and an end. If you later want ongoing strategic leadership, that's our Fractional CAIO service. An advisory project here is a low-risk way to find out if you need it.
Do we need to be "technical" to work with you?
No. We translate. You'll never be handed a deliverable you need an engineering degree to understand.
What if we already have IT staff or a developer?
Even better. We work alongside internal teams advising them, or building with them so the knowledge stays in-house after handover.
Can you just tell us if an idea is dumb before we spend money on it?
Genuinely, yes. That's a scoping call, and it's free. Sometimes it's the most valuable thirty minutes we offer.
